Traditional hard disk manufacturers such as Hitachi, Western Digital, and Seagate have been thrown for a loop as a glut of new competitors have entered their cloistered market. All of the sudden these monoliths’many whom invented some of the interface and access standards that still manifest today’have had to contend with upstarts like OCZ and Corsair’companies that have been in the flash or RAM markets previously and suddenly found themselves sitting on everything they needed to make SSDs.

There are several reasons that SSD drives didn’t take off previously to the last several years. First off, the actual manufacturing processes didn’t really have the capability of producing anything near the storage density of current drives for a reasonable price. It wasn’t until the last several years that it became economical to produce a solid state drive that could be purchased in the consumer space. Along with the inability to produce the required transistor density for a solid state drive, we also couldn’t produce the drive without also requiring a large amount of power to continue to run the drive. Because of both the density issue and the power issue, it never made sense to use a SSD in place of 1 or more magnetic drives. One way around the density issue is using MLC(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_cell), but this reduces performance and increases more errors. Hence, most fast SSD drives use single level cells that reduce density and increase cost.

OCZ went so far as to stop making RAM (the market they started in), buy a storage controller company, and re-brand themselves as a purveyor of high-end Ssd Technology, taking market share from hard drive companies. What do old standbys like Seagate do. They were mechanical manufacturers: they had factories and technologies to make very shiny metal disks with very tiny metal particles on them spin very quickly. They also had a lot of magnets. This new SSD stuff was alien technology.

Despite falling behind the latest drives in terms of raw performance figures, it is very unlikely that you would be able to see much difference in real world scenarios, especially if you happen to be upgrading from a mechanical hard drive.

Samsung claim that the 470 Series is designed in such a way that performance won’t degrade much over time, something that cannot be said of all Solid State Drive designs.”.

A couple years ago I built a simple computer from some spare parts and made it a linux desktop. A few days ago I decided to use it to replace an even older linux server I had running at my house. I turned it on (for the first time since I built it) and decided, after a few failed attempts at upgrading from Fedora 11 to Fedora 16, to put in a new hard drive and install Fedora 16 from scratch.

The machine has aMSI K8T Neo (MS 6702 v1) motherboard. A quick Google search on things related to Sata on that mother board led me to this forum post from someone with the same problem as I was having. People kept recommending the original poster jumper the hard drive to restrict it to Sata I performance. It didn’t work for the original poster, but I thought it was worth a try.

This means that all drives are recognized by the computer as one drive, and data transfer speeds remain fast. An online server is also available which automatically checks the drive for problems, even sending up to four emails if there are any serious issues. This and the G-SPEED eS are a popular choice amongst professional and home users who work in large scale video production, the difference being that this is much faster with it’s 12Gbit mini-SAS connection.

Other RAID configurations are supported, including RAID 1, 3, 5 and 6.This flexibility allows you to have some drives backup other drives or each drive running separately or all drives as one etc. A G-Tech PCIe x8 IOP RAID Controller Card which installs into your computer is included which lets you run two eS PRO units together. This enables two simultaneous streams of uncompressed 10-bit HD to be recorded at once instead of just one as well as providing a maximum of 16TB of total storage space. Better than Fibre-Channel speed performance is offered via super-fast 12Gbit mini-SAS connections compared to the now standard 3Gbit eSata.

Unfortunately it can only be linked with one other eS PRO for a total of 16TB available drive space whereas the regular G-SPEED eS uses the slower 3Gbit eSata but can be chained together in groups of four for a maximum of 32TB. As usual G-Tech drives look like and are formatted for use with Macintosh OS X computers, Windows XP and Vista users will require a reformat before using.

The major improvements of SAS technology include support for up to 128 hard drives on a single controller, more than quadrupling SCSI bandwidth for substantial performance gains. As with all Aberdeen Stirling servers, the Stirling X332 offers the benefit of RAID controller redundancy. Additionally, upgrading to SAS will allow for backward compatibility with Sata Ii Drives for unprecedented flexibility and involves zero cost premiums compared with traditional SCSI solutions.

The most obvious answer would appear to be that the vendors with the least margin will suffer most. Think of the likes of Drobo or Overland, who sell relatively low cost hardware. Theoretically vendors such as EMC and Netapp should be able to swallow the additional cost, especially if they are already charging 10-15 times the underlying raw cost of the drive on a per terabyte basis.

It’s also worth thinking about efficiency at this point. If you’re not using thin provisioning or other data reduction technologies, then you should be. If your vendor doesn’t offer it, then there are plenty out there who do. As prices rise, it may be time to look again at implementing these features and fixing the processes that stop you using them today.

The drive cost makes up a small part of their overall price. The big vendors should also have the muscle to fulfill their demand first with what supply is available. Read more on Sata Ii Drives

Jumpers In a computer system, it’s possible to have more than one harddrive. To connect multiple IDE drives, you need to chain the ribbon cables from one to the next. The computer system has no idea which is the main drive, from which to load the operating system.

Performance This one of the most important reasons to make sure you get a computer with a SATA harddrive. IDE is much slower than SATA. Even the fastest IDE drive, which has a data transfer speed of 133MB/s is slower than a standard SATA drive, which has a transfer rate of 150MB/s. In fact newer Sata Ii Drives have doubled that to 300MB/s.

For this reason, IDE drives have a ‘jumper’ pin. The position of the pin will determine if it is a ‘master’ or a ‘slave’.

That event sent me looking for alternatives. I tried to create a USB bootable drive, but soon realized it wasn’t going to meet all of my needs. When I found the OCZ Vertex 3, via a OCZ Vertex 3 review, I was amazed by what it has to offer.

OCZ Vertex 3 Solid State Drives unleash the performance potential of the SATA 6Gbps interface, leading the speed revolution in this next-generation solution. As the first SSD to feature the latest Sandforce controller design, OCZ designed the Vertex 3 to push the limits in both sequential and random read/write rates to blaze past the competition when every MB/s matters. With incredible 4k file writes up to 85,000 IOPS, these latest drives take productivity, gaming, and multimedia applications to the next level to work in perfect symmetry with the latest enthusiast platforms.

Two million hours of function time. That extends way beyond what my conventional hard drive lasted. Needless to say, I was also impressed when I found out the OCZ Vertex 3 actually sped up movies and other interactive media on my laptop. In fact, I like the OCZ Vertex 3 so much, I bought one for back up, and one to use in place of my conventional hard drive.

For those of you counting, that brings the grand total to three for new series of SSDs from OCZ in 2009. First we had the Apex series, followed by the Summit series we previewed yesterday and now we round out the lineup with the Vertex. You may also notice that these three terms are synonyms; don’t ask us about that, we are just interested in technology and performance.

Indilinx is reviving a technique used by Mtron (one of the earliest SSD producers). Instead of using an off the shelf JMicron controller, Indilinx has rolled their own controller. They employ a programmable ARM7 microcontroller to control a data pipeline between the SATA interface and the flash memory. Their implementation has a new twist in that additional bus work has been added to assist in control and data transfer. This additional bandwidth should help to reduce latency and increase overall throughput. When combined with the SDRAM buffer, improvements should be seen in small write access. As long as the ARM keep everything flowing smoothly, this combination may help reduce the dreaded MLC ‘lag’ seen by many early adopters.

But why all the different SSDs. In reality the drives are all based on very different technology. The Apex is a band-aid combination of a pair of JMicron controllers in a RAID configuration, the Summit uses a new, but standard design Samsung controller that utilizes on-drive cache and the Vertex is the first drive to use the new Barefoot SSD controller from a new company on the scene: Indilinx .

The durability of the OCZ Vertex, made with lightweight alloy housing and no moving parts makes it stronger than your conventional hard drives. This design gives the Ocz Vertex Ssd (Solid State Drive) twice as long a life than your older HHD made with small parts. With no moving parts, it reduces heat of the OCZ Vertex which runs with an operating temperature of -10C to +70C and a storage temperature of -55C to +140C.

If youre a hard core gamer and want high performance with mediocre cost, your best bet is choosing an Ocz Vertex Ssd hard drive. The available capacity of 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and the 256GB gives you all ranges to choose from. With the low energy cost, which gives you longer lasting battery life makes it a great choice for any mobile device. With a high performance read speed of 250 MBs and the writing speed of 180 MBs you can have your laptop or mobile device running the way you always wanted.

Also the low energy power consumption, at 2 watts while operating and .5 watts in stand by your OCZ Vertex will save on power consumption. It also comes with a 2 year warranty.

Let’s not just criticise for the sake of scoring cheap mileage. Prof Pat Mvunga is a Constitutional heavyweight and so is Mwangala Zaloumis. There aren’t any better than these two that I know can interpret Constitutional like they know how.

Hmmmmmmm. I wonder if the early church would cry to have a seat on the constitution making of the Roman Empire. Could this be marriage of convenience between church and the state. On the other hand Could this be the woman riding the beast. I feel the true Church can still fight without. Church and State are two different institutions that can not wholly work together. A church is a Nationa within a Nation, if so, we have so many types of nations representing their governments here in Zambia. Are they also fighting for a seat on the Committee of Experts or simply voicing their concern on the costitution making process. Why the so called mother church Bodies crying foul. If they are true Christians, do they know who they represent. Shame. That is why they even perpetrate the wrong concept of Zambia being a christian nation. This country will never be a Christian Nation because in saying so, what you mean is that Zambia is a church state like the one Saul of Kish, David, Solomon etc presided over. Question is; where these people using man made constitution (Laws) or the Moral of God ‘ Bible. I quote ’20 For our conversation(Commonwealth, Citizenship) is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Phil 3:20′.

In them 2 alone they can collect all the past submissions and give us a Constitution that can stand the test of time. The only controversial appointments on this list are the 3 Catholic Priests; but then the Catholics have been known for championing basic human rights and standing with the poor and down-trodden in our society. How I wished the late Bishop Paul Duffy was on this team. What I’m worried about the most is what Sata will do with the draft Constitution they will submit to him. In my opinion the draft should have just gone directly to parliament for debate and subsequently enactment. We have seen each and every President start with good intentions, only to water down the good report by removing stuff perceived to threaten their stranglehold to power. As for those whingeing about lack of enough representation, I thought this wasn’t supposed to be a Constituent Assembly, but rather a team of ‘experts’ (whatever that means). There is a better way you can contribute besides being on the team: MAKE SUBMISSIONS TO THE TEAM when it starts sitting. As for those calling for consulation, I believe Sata has appointed these people to do the ‘CONSULTATION’ on his behalf. Your time to be consulted will come when the representatives go round and collect people opinions. Please stop this cry baby attitude. I know the majority just wanted to be part of it so they can get paid’ not so fast this time.
